In Hawaii, a tragic incident occurred when four large dogs attacked and killed a man believed to be in his 70s on Tuesday, according to the local police. The horrifying incident took place in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates residential subdivision. A witness reported hearing commotion outside his home that morning and rushed to help when he saw the man being attacked on the road. Despite the efforts of officers who arrived before 9 a.m. local time, the victim was unconscious and couldn’t survive his injuries. As of now, the victim’s identity remains unknown, pending an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Hawai’i Island Police Chief Ben Moszkowicz emphasized that there’s no evidence suggesting the victim provoked the dogs’ vicious attack, describing the event as a senseless tragedy that could have been prevented.
The owners of the dogs were not present during the attack, but they have voluntarily surrendered all four dogs, as well as a litter of 10 puppies, to the Hawai’i County Animal Control and Protection Agency. Police are also investigating claims that these dogs had been previously reported as strays.
The incident is being treated as a possible case of negligent failure to control a dangerous dog, which is considered a felony crime under local law. If convicted, the dog owners could face severe penalties, including up to a $25,000 fine, 10 years in prison, restitution, and the potential humane euthanization of the dogs involved. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the consequences of failing to control dangerous animals.
